Small nooks for a home office space

Summertime is a wrap, and school is upon us once again. It may have you thinking of a better home office space set up.

Covid has taught us many things, one of which is we all need to have a work space that isn’t our dining room table and a place to call our own. Consider using small nooks in your home for that perfect office space.

Here are nine home office space ideas highlighting creative solutions for utilizing the space you have – or think you don’t have!

#1 Sofa table

A very simple way if space is tight is to use a sofa table behind your couch for office space. An added bonus is if the console table has a shelf or some doors, so you can tuck away your laptop or office accessories. You can also put a console table by a window or along a wall utilizing the length of the table to spread out papers and have room for your computer or laptop and a coffee cup.

This can be anywhere you have a bit of wall space that you can put up shelves to create an office that is out of the way. You can install multiple shelves to provide storage for office accessories or install a flip-down shelf that you can use for a laptop and lower when you’re finished using it and have it out of the way. Keeping an occasional chair or stool nearby that can double as a desk chair is a great way to economize.

#3 Hall table

A hall table or writing desk can make a nice small desk or laptop table. They are usually narrow and small enough to be placed in a passageway near a doorway or entrance to another room. They don’t often take up too much space and can provide extra storage too.

#4 Formal living room or dining room

So many homeowners have embraced open concept design and eat-in kitchens. If you have a formal living room or dining room, consider converting one of them to a home office and incorporate book shelves for storage.

This could be in your kitchen or hallway where there might be an indentation in the wall where you can create a small work space to accommodate a laptop. Adding a small stool that can be pushed under keeps the space neat and tidy.

#6 Bookcase or wall unit

Utilizing a bookcase or wall unit is a great way to have a work space without it necessarily looking like a work space.

#7 Convert a closet

This a perfect hide-away spot that can fit a desk well and offer up plenty of storage and shelving utilizing all the vertical space. The beauty with using a closet is when you are done with work, you can simply close the doors. If you don’t mind the work space being visible, remove the doors for a more open feel. Use a guest room or hall closet as an option. Painting the space in a light, bright colour will add to the overall feel and look.

#8 Under stairs

Using the stairwell space is a great use of cubic space and provides an out-of-the-way home office. Putting up shelves to take advantage of all the vertical space for storage is ideal. Using a stool that can be pushed under the desk area keeps the space tidy and the passageway unobstructed when not in use.

#9 Wall-mounted console or built-in cabinets

If space is limited, then a dual-purpose idea that can serve as a generous work area or a display is using a wall-mounted console table or built-in cabinets in your living area. An occasional chair can also serve as a dual purpose, as a desk chair and extra seating for guests.

No matter your home office environment, ensure there is plenty of light, either natural or with the use of lamps to keep it bright and cheery.
