The OBEETEE story begins in 1920 in Mirzapur, India.

Ethical craftsmanship, innovative design & traditional processes gives Obeetee the distinction of being the most reputable exporter of hand-made, hand tufted and hand knotted rugs from India.

The integrity of their craftsman heritage has been handed down through generations of weavers which is the cornerstone of their business.

Obeetee make solid commitments to the social, economic and environmental impacts of their business and the community and was the first in their industry to achieve the world’s preeminent and auditable SA8000 certification of social standards.

Having piqued the interest & earned the patronage of the likes of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Obeetee has grown to be the oldest manufacturer of rugs from India & one of its largest exporters in the world.

Since our founding almost 100 years ago, Obeetee has advocated for social and environmental change in the Indian rug industry. We

were the first in our market to achieve the SA 8000 Standard, the leading social certification for factories and organizations across the globe.

Our systems for the prevention of child labor have been lauded by the International Labor Organization and other human rights groups,

and we were the first in our industry to install a water effluent treatment plant and energy conservation systems. Alongside our programs

for children’s education and women’s economic advancement, our work is focused on improving quality of life for workers, their families and

our customers. We also focus on environmentally concious efforts:

WATER TREATMENT
For over 30 years, Obeetee has prevented hazardous wastewater from entering the environment—a persistent concern in India’s manufacturing

industry. In 2007, we were the first to install an energy-efficient water effluent treatment plant in Uttar Pradesh. Unlike conventional wastewater

treatment, which relies primarily on chemicals, Obeetee’s plant uses temperature controls, microorganisms, and physio-chemical processes to

safely and effectively treat waste.

ENERGY CONSERVATION
Using a combination of high-tech steam valves, geothermal wool insulation and roof fans, Obeetee has reduced steam consumption by 10%,

lowered heat load by 4 degrees Celsius and lowered cooling costs by 75%.

WASTE REDUCTION
Recently, we installed a compost compacter and upgraded our digital technology to reduce waste and energy use. With digital color-matching

and infrared carpet drying, Obeetee is able to stabilize production during drastic weather events, such as heavy rains.

Obeetee is the largest handmade rug maker in India and one of the oldest hand-woven rug companies in the world. As India’s

largest manufacturer and exporter Since 2004, Obeetee has been awarded the industry’s best social certification: SA Standard

8000, administered by Social Accountability International. Through bi-annual audit by Norwegian auditing/certification organization

DNV (Det Norske Veritas), we have met compliance for rigorous standards including: Zero-tolerance child labor or forced labor,

assuring a safe & healthy workplace, freedom of association & right to collective bargaining, no discrimination, humane disciplinary

practices in accordance with law, proper working hours, proper remuneration/wages, control ofsuppliers & sub-contractors and

effective implementation & improvement.

FAIR TRADE
Our Fair Trade Certified factory in Uttar Pradesh meets the highest standards of health, safety and fair labor practices. Workers are

paid a premium, which they invest in the benefits of their choice.

GOODWEAVE
The GoodWeave label means that no child, forced or bonded labor was used in the making of our products, and that purchases

support programs to educate children and ensure fair work for adults.

WOOLS OF NEW ZEALAND
Owned by farmers, Wools of New Zealand leads in land management, animal welfare, social responsibility and transparency. Many

farmers are accredited to the Textile Exchange’s Responsible Wool Standard.

WOOLMARK
The Woolmark logo indicates Australian wool that’s been audited for high levels of quality assurance, from farm to finished product.
